I Keep Coming Back to the Same Question

I find myself thinking about the same question in completely different situations: why do some things last? I think about it when I read about old fashion houses, when I look at jewellery that has been passed through generations, and when I hear stories about companies that have somehow remained relevant long after the people who started them are gone. It cannot just be about having a good product. There are plenty of good products that disappear. There has to be something underneath it. A certain standard. A way of thinking. A culture that gets passed from one person to another. I think that is what interests me about building a company more than almost anything else. In the early stages, it is very easy to think about the next customer, the next product, the next milestone. But eventually you have to start asking what you are actually building underneath all of that. What becomes part of the way people work? What standards survive when you are not in the room? What remains when the original idea has evolved into something much bigger than you imagined? I don’t know if there is a formula for building something enduring. If there were, everyone would do it. But I think about the question often, and I suspect I will for a long time.
